The 2013 Fantasy Baseball SS Rankings are important to your Fantasy team – but not the most important. You’ll want to bulk up on corner infielders with power and slugging corner outfielders and speedy center fielders. The middle infielders generally give you little in the power categories, and are so-so in the speed categories.
You’d like them to help you out in batting average and runs scored, but even those categories have just a few really good players. Don’t believe me? Let’s take a look at the five main categories. For fun, let’s compare against the second base position.
Home runs: Over the past three seasons, only ONE shortstop has averaged over 20 homers per season. Got any guesses as to whom? (His name rhymes with Smoy Smulowitzki.) There were SIX second basemen that averaged 20 homers or more in that span.
Runs Batted In (RBI): Not one shortstop averaged over 80 RBI in a season. Not one. And only five knocked in on average more than 65 runs per season. Three second basemen averaged over 80 RBI each season, and eight knocked in more than 65 runs.
Runs scored: Just four shortstops scored more than 80 runs per season on average from 2010-12. Six second basemen reached that number on average.
Batting average: Of the 15 shortstops that averaged over 500 at-bats over the past three seasons, only about half of them had batting averages north of .270. HALF!!! Same for the 12 second basemen.
Stolen bases: OK, OK, I take it back about stolen bases. Eight different shortstops stole at least 20 bases on average since 2010, led by new Blue Jays’ shortstop Jose Reyes (36). Just two second basemen averaged 20 or more steals over the past three seasons.
See what I’m saying now?
Changes you’ll want to track:
There’s just not a lot of help for your team when you take a good look at the 2013 Fantasy Baseball SS Rankings , but remember that you only need one shortstop – and your middle infielder can always be an early cut if you find another streaking player early.
