All Topps All-Star Rookie Cup Winners in Baseball Card History

Baseball card collectors love seeing the Topps All-Star Rookie Cup on their cards, so we tracked down all the players named to that team dating back to when Topps first started announcing the team back in 1959, for the 1960 Topps Baseball series. (Speaking of great rookies, we tracked down the best rookie cards from every Topps series dating back to 1952!)

Topps recently announced the 2023 Topps All-Star Rookie Cup winners for the 2023 MLB season, so we updated this article accordingly! You should expect to see their 2024 Topps Baseball cards to have the All-Star Rookie Cups on them! Both the AL and NL Rookies of the Year landed on this list, of course, but who else got chosen? See below!

The Topps All-Star Rookie Cup team usually consists of eight position players and two pitchers (including a spot for a left-handed and right-handed pitcher). There have been special occasions where Topps has named a designated hitter to the list, or even a relief pitcher. There were also times where Topps didn’t announce a winner for a specific position if they didn’t feel anyone was worthy.

In 1960, the Topps All-Star Rookie Cup was an All-Star Rookie Trophy instead of a cup. (Topps would later change the trophy to the cup in 1973.)

The Topps All-Star Rookie Cup appeared on every set from 1960 to 1973, but it didn’t appear on the 1974 set. Then it was absent again from the 1979 set through the 1986 set. The Topps All-Star Rookie Cup reappeared in 1987 for good, and we’re all thankful for it!

The following is a list of all the players named to the Topps All-Star Rookie Cup team from 1959 through the most recent completed season. We also noted which of these players ended up being inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame! Interestingly, 28 different players on the Topps All-Star Rookie Cup team eventually made it into the Hall of Fame!

Collectors love the Topps All-Star Rookie Cup because they love rookies – and the Cup happens to make a rookie card really jump out as something special. As Topps rolled into the ‘80s, rookie cards started to come out earlier, so players like Jose Canseco’s rookie card, for instance, actually came in the 1986 Topps Traded set, rather than his 1987 card, which had the Topps All-Star Rookie Cup on them.

In 2006, Topps and the Major League Baseball Players Association came to an agreement to add the “RC” Rookie Card logos to first-year cards for players who were on the 40-man roster.

That means there were some players who ended up with both the Rookie Card logo and Topps All-Star Rookie Cup logo on their cards. That’s an interesting subset to collect!
