Four Fantasy Dark Horses For 2013

Four Fantasy Dark Horses

Jacob Turner, SP, Miami

If we begin on the east coast, Turner is certainly a pitcher to be reckoned with this year. Although, the 2012 season proved to be a rather disappointing year for this young pitcher, with five losses in 10 startsr. He was traded by the Tigers to the National League Marlins, which helped a lot. He had a 3.38 ERA in seven starts with his new club, and while he might not have much of an offense behind him, he will be pitching in a relatively favorable pitcher’s park. And that spells Fantasy dark horse for us.

Darin Ruf, OF, Philadelphia

Ruf is deep on the Phillies’ depth chart this spring, with Delmon Young and Laynce Nix set to work left field at Citizens Bank Park. But Ruf played well in his short stint in the majors last season, and he hit 10 homers in 32 games in the Venezuelan league this offseason.

Ruf’s future could be on an AL team as a DH at some point, considering his shaky defensive attributes. But his power is always needed and that definitely plays well in Philly. If he sticks with the club out of spring training, NL-only owners should consider his services.

Julio Teheran, SP, Atlanta

The 22-year-old prospect is coming into 2013 with more questions about his ability than when he was coming up as a top-five pitching prospect in 2012. The Braves reportedly changed his delivery last season, and that cost him – runs and confidence.

Teheran’s back to his old delivery for 2013, which could mean bad news for opposing hitters. He was ranked as the Braves’ top prospect coming into 2013 by Baseball America, and he is a great late-round sleeper in mixed leagues.

Wily Peralta, SP, Milwaukee

Peralta has a chance to be the Brewers’ fifth starter out of their rotation, and his late-season performance in 2012 with the big club portends to good things ahead this season. He didn’t allow any home runs in five starts (29 innings), and he kept runners from crossing the plate, with a very respectable 2.48 ERA.

While none of these Fantasy dark horses are guaranteed to be superstars, we do know that their youth and promise makes us more likely to believe they have good seasons ahead of them, compared to some journeymen veterans out there.
