Checking out the Week 3 Kicker rankings, eh? Color me impressed! Looking at these rankings is the equivalent of eating a salad without dressing or going swimming at a beach in Canada. This tells me three things about you as a Fantasy owner.
Before we get into that, I continue to be intrigued by the fact that there are five rookie kickers in action every week. That’s an inordinate amount of freshmen kickers. Throw in Brandon McManus, who was an undrafted rookie in 2013 that never made a kick in-season, and you have six first-year kickers.
As a matter of reference, we had just one rookie kicker last season (Caleb Sturgis), three in 2012 (Blair Walsh, Greg Zuerlein and Justin Tucker) and two in 2011 (Dan Bailey and Alex Henery).
So I thought we’d track how they’re doing – which also has us wondering about the future of the veterans looking for jobs: David Akers, Rob Bironas, Jay Feely, Connor Barth and Henery.
Cody Parkey, Philadelphia: 5-of-6 field goals, 7 XP – Currently the class of this rookie group. Worth owning in 12-team leagues.
Chandler Catanzaro, Arizona: 6-of-6 field goals, 1 XP – If the Cardinals hadn’t tried three two-point conversions over the past two weeks, Catanzaro would rank as the third Fantasy kicker in scoring, behind just Dan Carpenter and Parkey. Catanzaro has been perfect so far – and he definitely deserves starter consideration.Nate Freese, Detroit: 2-of-5 field goals, 4 XP – When the head coach has to come out and say they’re sticking with you for this week (Week 3 vs. Green Bay), that’s usually a sign that you’re in deep trouble for the following week.
Brandon McManus, Denver: 2-of-2 field goals, 7 XP – He’s killing it on kickoffs (11 touchbacks in 12 kickoffs for the Broncos), and while Matt Prater continues to serve his suspension, McManus is trying out for the other 31 teams. (Tell me the Lions wouldn’t snatch him up for Week 5 if they had the chance!)
Patrick Murray, Tampa Bay: 1-of-2 field goals, 4 XP – This offense has looked ugly, as have Murray’s kicks.
Cairo Santos, Kansas City: 2-of-4 field goals, 3 XP – Nothing special so far.
