2014 Third Base Rankings

You must be drafting this weekend if you are looking at our 2014 Third Base Rankings just now. Although Draft season is nearly over, it happens to be what is oft-referred to as “Draft Weekend. This means many owners are cramming for their only, or final drafts of the season now.

Third base is what I consider to be a scarce position. Once you get past the top 2 Tiers of Third Baggers there is a significant drop-off. Plenty of young players with upside, but plenty of question marks along with that upside. Let our rankings help you make a decision easier. If you’ve been reading my Draft Strategy Series you know I am targeting Third Base and Shortstop very early in drafts. If I were you, I would do the same. If you miss out, sit back and snag one of the young fellas and hope for the best.

The rankings for our other positions are posted at the bottom of the page. These Rankings will be updated frequently on Fantasy Pros, so be sure to look for the latest rankings there as well.

Stars:

Miguel Cabrera, Evan Longoria, David Wright, Edwin Encarnacion, Adrian Beltre: These are all players you can trust, and will provide very consistent stats while flashing power, and high batting average. After these big five, you may be hurting to match production

“Royals 3B Mike Moustakas is due for a breakout season,” said everyone for the past couple seasons. Is this finally the year? Photo Credit: Keith Allison

The Next Wave:

Manny Machado, Mike Moustakas, Xander Bogaerts, Nolan Arenado, Nick Castellanos: These guys all have shown promise at some point in their brief careers. Although I am hoping I don’t need to rely on them, if I have to I wouldn’t feel completely powerless. Plenty of upside, but along with their youth comes plenty of risk as well.

Potential Breakouts:

Chase Headley, Mike Moustakas, and Xander Bogaerts: Xander adapted well to his late season call-up in 2013, and Headley may have simply had a rough season in 2013. They all have the skill sets, it is just having a full-season to show it (For Bogaerts) or to prove they can match what they have done once in their careers already with Headley and Moustakas.

Avoiding. Avoiding. Avoiding

Please note, these are guys who are still very good, and valuable, I just prefer to avoid them and will not be taking them in any drafts this season because of their ADP.

Aramis Ramirez: As noted above he is very good when he is on the field. However, with persistent injuries I wouldn’t rely on him to be my everyday Third baseman. Or if he was, I would make sure I have a same tier, or comparable back-up plan in place.
