Picking up cheap Alexander Ovechkin cards, as Alexander the Great closes in on Wayne Gretzky for the all-time NHL scoring leader, is a smart way improve your hockey card collection!

On April 18, 1999, Wayne Gretzky played his last NHL game and with that retired with a record 894 goals, a record one thought would never be topped.

On October 5, 2005, Alexander Ovechkin skated in his first NHL game. He scored two goals in that game, and it appears he did not get the memo that Gretzky’s goal record was off limits.

Fast forward 20 years, as the 2025 NHL season winds down, Ovechkin is within reach of tying the “Great One.” There really is a good shot that Ovechkin gets this record this season — I would not bet against him.

On top of his goal-scoring prowess, Ovechkin has accumulated many awards over his Hall-of-Fame career.

  • He won the Stanley Cup and Conn Smythe Trophy as Stanley Cup MVP in 2017-18
  • The Art Ross Trophy (points leader)
  • The Calder Memorial (rookie of the year, same year Sidney Crosby was a rookie!)
  • 3 Hart Memorial Trophies (NHL MVP)
  • 3 Ted Lindsay Awards (most outstanding player as voted by NHL players)
  • 9 Rocket Richard Trophies (most goals)

As the record gets ever closer, Alexander Ovechkin cards have become extremely popular – and a bit pricey, especially for his 2005 Upper Deck Alexander Ovechkin Young Guns and SP Authentic Future Watch Auto, which released over 20 years ago and now retail for well over $1000. So, if you are a collector on a budget and still want to get good Alexander Ovechkin cards, here are six cards that might be for you.
