Once again, picking up saves on the free-agent market appears to be a popular move among the week’s Tout Wars transactions. The Mixed League has 15 teams, and there are only 30 closers to spread around, give or take an injured guy and a reliever losing his job. So since some teams have three or four closers on their teams (greedy!), and others have just one (me) or none, a recently named closer becomes quite the expensive commodity in weekly FAAB bids.
This week, the Cardinals handed their ninth-inning keys to veteran reliever Edward Mujica a couple times, and he quickly became the flavor of the day for the Mixed League Tout Wars owners.
St. Louis has had 85 or more wins in 11 of the past 13 seasons, and their closers get plenty of save opportunities. Mujica is a veteran, which Fantasy Baseball owners have to like, but he has played on four different teams already, which owners have to not like. But he’s got the job for now. Unfortunately, Mujica also has Mitchell Boggs and Trevor Rosenthal breathing down his neck. Rosenthal looks to be the Cardinals’ future closer, but they seem to want to slowly work him in.
I bid $18 on Mujica, as I chase a second closer to add to my roster, along with Braves RP Craig Kimbrel. Paul Singman, who currently ranks fourth in saves with 12, bid $25 on Mujica, and snatched him up for $19 (Vickery bidding puts the price at $1 above the second-highest bid). A few other owners chimed in with bids also, including CBSSports.com’s Nando Di Fino ($17), Zach Steinhorn ($17), Derek VanRiper ($12) and Tim Heaney ($8).
Rookie 3B Anthony Rendon also got some action, as RotoWire.com’s VanRiper bid $5 on the Nats’ hot cornerman, and he won him for $3.
