2013 Fantasy Football Kicker Rankings – Early Bird Version

Man, you really love Fantasy Football if you’re checking out the 2013 Fantasy Football Kicker Rankings this early! Good for you! Unfortunately, this is the one Fantasy position that can change the most from year to year, with superstars dominating one year and becoming afterthoughts the next.

(UPDATE: You can find our latest 2013 Fantasy Football Kicker Rankings posted here. We will continue to update these rankings throughout the summer, as news and injuries occur.)

Case in point, I was listening to Kyle Elfrink and Ray Flowers on The Fantasy Drive, a show on Sirius/XM Radio, and Flowers pointed out the craziness of the kicker position. He talked about how David Akers set the single-season record for field goals made in one season, with 44 in 2011, and he even blew past Jerry Rice (138) for the single-season scoring record of 166 points.

But then, in 2012, Akers returned to mortal levels, making 29 of 42 field-goal attempts. That’s the eighth-most made field goals – with an NFL-high field-goal attempts. Thirteen misses in one season to lead the NFL in the unfortunate category? (You’ll be happy to know that number is only HALF of the NFL record for missed field goals in a single season (26), held by Green Bay’s Paul Hornung in 1964.)

So what’s the point?

Well, you can always do your best to rank kickers on how many opportunities they get, since that seems to be the biggest key. You can’t make field goals if you’re not sent onto the field to kick them. (Brilliant!)

So basically, these 2013 Fantasy Football Kicker Rankings are more of an educated guess on which kickers will be afforded the most opportunities to score. Beyond that, it’s up to their foot and the wind!
