Who better to talk 2018 Fantasy Football rookies than with Garion Thorne, who now writes for DraftKings and SoCalledFantasyExperts?
I worked with Garion Thorne at FNTSY Sports Network, and now we’ve teamed up for our own Fantasy Football podcast! He’s an amazing host, keeps the show rolling along and definitely knows his stuff and keeps me on my toes. I would not be surprised to someday see him hosting a Fantasy Football television show for CBS Sports or the worldwide leader at some point.

Some of the topics we hit on include whether or not Giants rookie RB Saquon Barkley is worth selecting in Round 1 of your Fantasy drafts this summer. For me, spoiler alert, I’m not spending a first-round pick on any rookie – even if it’s the second coming of O.J. Simpson… That’s scary. As I mention in the podcast, a rookie has so many things to process, including moving to a new city (New York, of all places), getting paid millions of dollars for the first time, dealing with endorsements and things taking him away from the game, learning a new playbook, learning how to co-exist with his new teammates, a new offensive line, the speed of the NFL game, and a host of other changes. For me, that’s too much to guarantee that a rookie will perform like a top-12 player.
Which rookie do we think will start the season stronger, essentially?
We all know Bill Belichick loves to ruin the lives of Fantasy owners, much like Mike Shanahan used to do to us with Denver. But Belichick has only drafted one other running back with a first-round pick since 2000: Laurence Maroney (2006). The point being – the Patriots are more invested with Michel than almost all other rookie running backs in their history.
This is an interesting question because it’s becoming apparent that the 2014 rookie WR class was more of an anomaly than a trend of things to come. Will D.J. Moore, Calvin Ridley or Christian Kirk have a chance to start? You can check all my 2018 rookie WR rankings here!
Four quarterbacks were taken in the first 10 picks of the 2018 NFL Draft – so one of them has to have some early Fantasy value, right? (I’m getting ready to take Baker Mayfield in the SuperFlex Scott Fish Bowl – and we’re in Round 14, if you can believe that.) Here are my 2018 Rookie Quarterback Rankings for Fantasy Football, and a quick recap of the best rookie QBs in Fantasy history!
As I do in all our podcasts, I shared one of my favorite FREE Fantasy Football draft tools, and in this podcast episode, I broke down how awesome FantasyRundown.com is, and how it should be bookmarked by every respectable Fantasy player out there. Below is a video that reviews all the features on that site, and how Goose does it all.
Garion and I are all hyped up on rookies in this episode, but it’s also important to remember how great last year’s rookie class was, so we ranked the top second-year Fantasy players entering 2018! Last year’s group was the best rookie running back group in Fantasy history, so what does that mean for the upcoming season? We lay it all out!
The Dolphins have a pair of interesting rookies from a Fantasy perspective, including running back Kalen Ballage and tight end Mike Gesicki. With both Hunter Henry (2016) and Evan Engram (2017) blowing up in their rookie seasons, we look at Gesicki and wonder if the old adage of staying away from rookie tight ends in Fantasy is still a good idea. With Jarvis Landry in Cleveland, Gesicki just might be in line for a ton of targets over the middle – and more importantly, inside the red zone.
Hopefully, you’re as excited about these 2018 Fantasy Football rookies as we are! You know who else loves rookies? Jake Ciely from RotoExperts.com, so we had him on the “Fantasy On 5” podcast in mid-July to talk about his top-25 Fantasy Football rankings. Did you know he was named the Top FantasyPros Draft Ranker of 2017 Listen to our podcast with him – and make sure you LIKE and SUBSCRIBE… Pretty please?
